Who Could Resist a Tale of a Baby Squirrel Rescue?

A newborn squirrel is recovering after it fell from its nest and was quickly rescued by Animal Control Officer Alaina Onesko on Wednesday, July 31—and the photos are absolutely heartwarming, as is Alameda Police Department’s recounting of the tale on Facebook.

“You never know what Animal Control Officer Onesko has up her sleeve…” APD posted. “No, seriously, this time it is a neonate squirrel!”

The story continued to say that ACO Onesko—or simply ACO Alaina, as she is known to her many fans in Alameda—-responded to Fairview Avenue and High Street for the report of an abandoned baby squirrel on Wednesday after the wee baby likely fell from its nest high in a nearby tree.

The story was posted on Thursday, and by Friday morning, almost 400 people had liked, loved, or cared about it. Twenty-nine had commented on it, and more than a dozen had shared it. Local TV stations reported on it, including  KRON Channel 4 News.

Best part: Two adorable photos of ACO Onesko holding the baby squirrel—and a happy ending.

“Thanks to the quick response and care from ACO Onesko and our amazing partners at Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue (YUWR), the young squirrel is now in safe hands,” APD stated. “YUWR will nurse and care for the squirrel until it’s ready to be released back into Alameda.”

One commenter responded, “ACO Alaina is an amazing animal whisperer.” She certainly is. Another wrote, “Love the way the little guy is hanging out on her finger.” Praises and gratitude filled the comments section, with dozens saying simply what so many Alamedans agree upon: “She’s the best!”

Alameda thanks you, ACO Alaina!
