How Bike-Friendly is Alameda? Share Your Opinions in an Online Survey

The City of Alameda was named a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) in 2021 and has recently submitted an application to the League of American Bicyclists to renew—or perhaps even improve—-its status. The awards are given for a four-year period.

Alameda was one of just 149 U.S. cities awarded a silver or higher recognition in 2021. The award recognized Alameda for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices, according to a statement issued by the City when it received the award.

Alameda was first recognized as a bronze-level BFC in 2012, which was renewed in 2016, and elevated to silver level in 2021.

At that time, Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft said, “I’m thrilled that the League recognized the incredible work Alameda has done with our community partners over the last decade to make Alameda a safer and more inviting place to bicycle.” She added that the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan could put Alameda “on its way to achieving the gold-level award.”

As part of the process of renewing or possibly improving the City’s status as A Bicycle Friendly City, the League of American Bicyclists is asking anyone familiar with or interested in bicycling in the Alameda community to participate in a public survey about experiences and perceptions of riding a bike here.

This public input will help both the League and the City to better understand current bicycling conditions and potential areas for improvement.

The online survey will be open through Sunday, October 5, and the Bicycle Friendly Community award results are expected to be released in December. This survey should take approximately 10 to15 minutes to complete.
