ALAMEDUH Print Zine Launch Party

Thursday, November 6

Celebrate local media and Alameda businesses at the ALAMEDUH Print Zine Launch Party on Thursday, November 6, in the parking lot near Two Marys’ Mercantile, 2021 Alaska Packer Place. Festivities are scheduled from 5 until 8 p.m.

ALAMEDUH is a recent, welcome addition to Alameda’s media landscape. On their Instagram, ALAMEDUH shares local events, artists, businesses, and neat finds around town. Their Launch Party celebrates the much-anticipated publication of the brand’s printed zine.

While you’re at the party, grab your free copy of the printed zine, check out live music, and enjoy bites from Calafia Taqueria, Saltbreaker, and Treats by Mrs. Tee. At least 14 vendors will offer their wares at a mini pop-up market. All vendors will be Alameda-based, and Brice from Two Birds from Alameda will be among them.

Entry to the event is free, and registration is not required. While you’re there, be sure to check out Two Marys’ Mercantile for an outstanding curated collection of homegoods, decor, and thrifted clothing. Let’s shop local—DUH!

Island Bowl Livestream

Friday, November 7

The Island Bowl is back, and the seating just expanded! Cheer for your favorite team remotely at the all-new Island Bowl Livestream at Alameda Theatre & Cineplex, 2713 Central Avenue. The game is on Friday, November 7. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Island Bowl is a much-anticipated annual varsity football game between Alameda High School (AHS) and Encinal High School (EHS). The tradition has been going strong for over 70 years, and thanks to the new livestream option, fans can order delicious food and drinks from the Cinema Grill while they watch the game from reclined seats at the theatre.

Reserve your spot by purchasing a ticket on the Alameda Theatre website, just like you would for a movie showtime. Tickets are $11.50, and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the AHS and EHS athletic boosters. This event is made possible by donations from the Alameda Elks Lodge and Alameda Theatre & Cineplex.

‘Ten Native California Plants That Will Thrive in Your Garden’

Saturday, November 8

It’s never too early to start planning your spring garden! Join Alameda Backyard Growers for their latest lecture, Ten Native California Plants That Will Thrive in Your Garden at the Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, on Saturday, November 8, from 1:30 until 3 p.m.

“What if you left your nest and set out to find a new home, but you were unable to find the food, shelter, nest sites or roosts that you needed?” the event description asks. “This is the plight so many of our native species, including birds, bats, insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals face.” Learn how to turn your small urban yard into a native species oasis with Birgitt Evans, an Alameda County Master Gardener since 1999.

Entry to this event is free, and registration is required. Be sure to fill out the form with any questions that you may have for the presenter.

Altarena Playhouse presents The Wisdom of Eve

Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through November 23

Support local theater and spend a night on the town with Altarena Playhouse’s latest production, The Wisdom of Eve. See the show at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, or 2 p.m. on Sundays, through November 23.

“The play is about an ambitious young woman whose desire to become a Broadway actor is achieved through manipulation, misrepresentation, lies and blackmail, and whose insidious efforts lead her to Hollywood,” writes Gene Kahane in his review of the performance. The audience is transported back to yesteryear, with “scandals” that seem trivial compared to today’s viral moments.

The Wisdom of Eve runs for two hours and 20 minutes plus a single intermission. Guests who require mobility accommodations are encouraged to reach out to the theater in advance. Tickets range from $25 to $35 and are available online.
