Road construction continues in Alameda—and new projects are set to begin. The City has now announced that work on both the Clement Avenue/Tilden Way Improvement Project and the Pacific Avenue Greenway is scheduled to start soon.

Clement Avenue/Tilden Way – Construction to begin Monday, October 20
Designed to improve safety for all street users and reduce vehicle delays on and off the island, this project includes a roadway reconfiguration with the construction of a roundabout at Tilden Way/Blanding Avenue/Fernside Boulevard, safety improvements at the intersection of Tilden Way/Broadway, and an extension of Clement Avenue from Broadway to Tilden Way.
Construction work will be in five stages and will involve various road closures with detours for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Work includes, but is not limited to, demolition of existing roadway, installation of new utilities and roadway, and new pavement delineation and landscaping, according to the City. The Bridgeside Shopping Center will remain open but getting there will likely involve detours.
Stage 1 construction is set to begin on Monday, October 20, and will involve temporarily closing the right shoulder of Broadway between Tilden Way and Clement Avenue. Street parking and driveway access within the work area will be affected. “No Parking” signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of any work.
This stage will focus on constructing the extension of Clement Avenue from Broadway to Tilden Way and constructing half of the pedestrian/bicycle path from the Bridgeside Shopping Center along Tilden Way. Temporary walkways will be placed to allow pedestrians and bicyclists a path from the extended Clement Avenue to the shopping center.
This stage of construction is expected to last until February 26, subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, and will be followed by stages 2 through 5. The City will provide more information directly to nearby residents and as construction progresses.

Pacific Avenue Greenway construction to start in November
Neighborhood Greenways are local, traffic-calmed streets designed to give priority to people walking and biking, where bicyclists and motorists can safely share the road and busy street crossings are made safer. A key component of the City’s Active Transportation Plan includes forming 10 miles of the Low-Stress Bikeway Backbone Network.
Construction on the first full segment of a Neighborhood Greenway on Pacific Avenue between Lafayette and Oak streets is scheduled to begin by November, according to the City’s latest announcement. The project will use a combination of new and previously used traffic calming treatments along a continuous corridor, including:
- A neighborhood traffic circle at Chestnut Street.
- Painted curb extensions at Lafayette and Oak streets.
- Six asphalt speed humps between Chestnut and Oak streets.
- Daylighting (no parking near crosswalks) at all intersections.
- Paint and bollards in the bulbouts that were installed in April at Willow and Walnut streets, along with stop signs and red curb.
The City will notify residents along this section of Pacific Ave and nearby before construction begins and when temporary parking restrictions are put in place. The Slow Streets barricades will be removed by the time construction is completed, or sooner.

More greenway construction to start next fall
The next phase of Neighborhood Greenways implementation is the design phase, with construction sets to begin in Fall 2026. It will include the Slow Street sections of Versailles Avenue, San Jose Avenue, and the remaining section of Pacific Avenue (Ninth Street to Lafayette Street). The concept plans are being finalized and may be modified based on lessons learned from the Pacific Avenue pilot. Construction is anticipated by Fall 2026.
The Council funded the construction of these sections of Neighborhood Greenways when they adopted the 2025-27 Biennial Budget in June.
The latest versions of the Neighborhood Greenway concept plans are available to view online, as follows:
- San Jose Avenue/Morton Street (San Antonio to Oak).
- Versailles Avenue (Calhoun to Fernside).
- Pacific Avenue (Ninth to Oak).
