WEAD-sponsored murals define RADIUM performance area at Seaplane Lagoon
Have you seen the colorful new murals out by Seaplane Lagoon? Three shipping containers have been covered by murals painted by artists Pancho Pescador and Pablo Raiz Arroyo. The title of the work is “Life of Flight,” and it is part of the massive Taxiway Mural project produced by the West End Arts District (WEAD). The containers will also serve to define the performance area for the upcoming RADIUM Runway events.
An RFP was issued last year for artists to come up with artwork to cover a 13-acre swath of the former Naval Air Station taxiway as the former military base is redeveloped into the Alameda Point Waterfront District. Now the first fruits of these efforts are on display. You can also watch video of the mural installation.
The murals on the containers are the first phase of the Taxiway Mural project, which WEAD referred to as “the vertical part of the project.” The next phase, to start next month in September, is to begin painting the ground mural. The first phase of the project was designed and installed by Twin Walls Mural Company and Chilovia and sponsored by the East Bay Association of Realtors.
