The Alameda High Girls and Boys Tennis Team fundraiser, support for Prop 50, and support for President Trump
Successful tennis fundraiser
To the Editor:
Sharing some local news. The Alameda High Girls and Boys Tennis Team fundraiser at the Harbor Bay Club was a huge success on October 4. Close to 100 people participated in tennis, lunch, raffle and watched an exhibition match of the top players. $10,000 was raised for the tennis program.

Why Alameda should vote ‘Yes’ on Prop 50
To the Editor:
On November 4, Alamedans will join voters across California to decide on Proposition 50, a measure that would temporarily redraw our state’s congressional districts to help restore fairness in next year’s midterm election and push back against a brazen power grab by President Donald Trump and his allies.
This summer, the Republican-led Texas legislature approved new congressional maps designed to hand Trump five additional safe Republican seats, effectively tightening his control over Congress. Other states are following suit, threatening to hand over control of Congress before a single vote is cast.
California can fight back with Proposition 50. By adopting new, temporary congressional maps that create five likely Democratic seats, our state can offset the partisan imbalance created by Texas and ensure that Americans choose who governs our country. These maps would expire in 2030 and only take effect if Texas and other Republican-led states proceed with their own partisan redistricting plans.
We Californians have long been proud of our fair, independent redistricting process. Proposition 50 calls for the same fairness nationwide. But we can’t stand by while our democracy is taken over.
There is too much at stake, including here in Alameda. Federal cuts driven by this Congress will impact our community’s access to healthcare, food assistance, climate resilience programs, and infrastructure funding that keep our city running.
Thousands of our neighbors rely on Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP support. The Alameda Food Bank feeds 500–700 families each day, families who depend on federal nutrition programs that are now at risk. Alameda Health Systems, which manages our sole Alameda Hospital, expects to lose $100 million annually due to Medicaid cuts.
Our city had received a significant FEMA grant to address flooding on Bay Farm Island, which was later eliminated by a Trump-era spending cut.
Continued attacks on the Department of Education, including the recent gutting of its Special Education division, could disrupt vital services for Alameda students and our high-performing public schools.
Families of color live in fear and intimidation from ICE, afraid to go to work or drop their children off at school, even when they are here legally. That’s not the Alameda we believe in. Everyone belongs here.
Alameda has always stood up for what’s right. This November, we can do it again. Vote YES on Prop 50.

In defense of President Trump
To the Editor:
It would be such a joy if the citizens of Alameda, and the rest of the country, could actually understand the good that the president has done already for the country and support his efforts.
The Trump derangement syndrome is so ridiculous and based on faulty information and an amazing lack of knowledge, that it is hard to believe that the people have actually been educated or know anything about history. The protest marches are ridiculous and I could not understand why anyone gives them the time of day. I have been a student of history my entire life and what I am seeing these days is stunning. Unbelievable!
I hope this situation will turn around for the better, and soon. The USA doesn’t need this sort of stupid behavior.
Just saying.
